Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure wherein the fat accumulated in an area is removed by suctioning. The procedure is not assessed by the amount of reduction in Kilograms but the ultimate contour attained by inch loss. Therefore diet and exercise become mandatory to maintain the results achieved by liposuction. Liposuction could be performed to any body part like the cheek/double chin/arms/ Breast Surgery /abdomen/back/thighs/legs etc Multiple areas could be combined in the same sitting.
Liposuction Surgery for single area could be performed under local anesthesia but when multiple areas are combined general anesthesia is preferred. The technique used commonly is called tumescent technique. In this method saline containing Adrenalin(to reduce blood loss) and local anesthesia is injected into the area to be sucked out. Fat is then aspirated using cannulas (tubular instrument) without or with assistance of power (Microaire)/Ultrasonic waves (lysonix/vaser)/laser(smartlipo/cool touch).
Liposuction is commonly performed as a day care procedure wherein the patient could be discharged six hours after the procedure.
It is common to notice skin discoloration(Echhymosis) after liposuction which usually disappears over six weeks. Patchy areas of numbness would be felt over the liposucked area. Edema (Swelling due to accumulation of fluid) would be present upto two weeks after surgery. Noticeable inch loss would be evident after all the edema settles. Scars less than one cm in size would remain at the port site.

Pre Operative Instructions
- Antiseptic Scrub (Betadine Surgical Scrub) of the treatment area three times before surgery: (Patient is instructed to wash the treatment area with the antiseptic scrub three times before surgery. Twice the previous day and once on the day of surgery along with his regular bath)
- Prophylactic oral antibiotics to be started from the day before surgery
- Excessive hair in the treatment area is to be shaved on the previous day
- Nothing to be taken orally six hours before surgery
- Patient would be expected to report one hour before the surgical time
- Jewels/perfumes/talcum powders to be avoided on the day of surgery
- Light breakfast is allowed for patients undergoing procedures under local anesthesia.
Post Operative Instructions
- Oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain killers) to be continued for five days as per the prescription
- Normal diet would be resumed six hours after surgery
- Dressing is avoided from getting wet until further orders
- On the 2nd postoperative day the entire dressing is changed and a compression girdle is fitted before counteracts swelling and pain and to help adapt the skin to the changed contours of the body. This compression girdle also encourages the skin to tighten and should be worn for at least 4 weeks after the operation
- Antibiotic ointment would be prescribed for local application over suture line after the dressing is removed
- Sutures if any would be removed between the fifth to tenth day depending on the area
- Scar remodeling therapy would be started after all sutures are removed
- Compression garment to be worn after 48hours and thereafter 24/7 for 6 weeks and then as many hours as possible for next six weeks
- Driving to be resumed after all analgesics have been stopped for 48 hours
- Desk jobs could be resumed after five days and other activities after two weeks
- Two weeks after the operation the skin can be treated with moisturizing body lotion, massaged gently on a daily basis into the areas of skin treated. Physical exertion, sport, and exposure to direct sunlight are permitted after 4 weeks
- We recommend training in the gym after liposuction. A "top body" or "washboard stomach" can normally only be achieved by liposuction incombination with strenuous physical training, not by liposuction alone
With the help of liposuction, fat cells are permanently removed. Since the fat cells do not grow back, liposuction treatment produces a permanent effect.However, further changes to the shape of the body are possible. The results of the operation are dependent on the patient's general health, the condition of the skin, the patient's age and weight, and the hormonal content of the body, among other things. In particular, significant weight gain caused by nutrition will result in the layer of adipose tissue increasing again even in the treated area, as the remaining fat cells will fill out .Occasionally, wavelike unevenness or dimples become visible on the surface of the skin, but these usually reduce again within 6months.
As with all aesthetic procedures, corrective operations may be necessary if the results of the treatment do not meet the patient's expectations or if an unsatisfactory aesthetic result is produced because of wound-healing disturbances, infections, postoperative bleeding, etc.
